10Trax: Collaboration O’Clock

All of your favourites are here working together in harmony for New Music Friday.

This week is heavy on the collaborations. From Charli XCX and Troye Sivan to Anderson .Paak and Kendrick Lamar, all our favourite big names have teamed-up for new tracks. There’s also new music from Little Simz, Joji and  L Devine. All that and more below.

Charli XCX & Troye Sivan – ‘1999’

In 1999 Charli XCX was seven which makes the messaging of this song a little confusing. On paper a Charli X Troye collab makes a lot of sense but like so many tracks before it, it suffers from expectations exceeding reality. 90s nostalgia is very current, but this might be a step too far.

Anderson .Paak – ‘TINTS ft. Kendrick Lamar’

It might be October but Anderson .Paak and Kendrick have just restarted the summer with this track. It’s fairly standard sun-soaked west coast goodness from .Paak at this point but let’s be real we’ve been waiting for this moment since ‘Compton’.

Dave – ‘Funky Friday ft. Fredo’

Dave is incapable of making a bad tune, and his best are almost always collaborations. First ‘Thiago Silva’, then ‘Samantha’, now this. Fredo makes a solid case for believing the hype with his guest verse on this, but Dave is the star – “I put the icy in IC3” is one of the year’s best bars.

Dapz on The Map – ‘Off To Work ft. JME’

This is the second Matrix referencing visual this week. Are the Wachowskis planning a remake or something? Anyway the Matrix aside, Dapz is looking more and more like next up and a JME co-sign is only going to help that.

Joji – ‘Can’t Get Over You ft. Clams Casino’

Clams Casino doesn’t get half the credit he deserves for redefining hip hop. This new Joji track is just more evidence of Clams’ production talent, it’s also a huge bop.

L Devine – ‘Can’t Be You’

L Devine comes through with a sugar-sweet indie pop anthem on new one ‘Can’t Be You’. Catch her our The Great Escape First Fifty Showcase next month.

Courtney Barnett – ‘Small Talk’

This week everyone’s favourite Aussie songwriter dropped a track from the cutting room floor of her latest album. ‘Small Talk’ is non-chalant, off the cuff and everything that’s great about Barnett.

Little Simz – ‘Offence’

Simz is coming to collect on this one. Consistently one of the UK’s best lyrical talents, somehow she’s still slept on. ‘Offence’ should wake people up.

Blood Orange – ‘Chewing Gum ft. A$AP Rocky and Project Pat’

Dev Hynes. Rocky. Quadbikes. What more is there to say?

LCD Soundsystem – ‘Oh Baby’

For some reason, I missed this video when it came out last week, but it’s exactly the kind of cerebral, a bit nerdy but really well directed visual that makes LCD so great so it’s going in this week’s playlist and there’s nothing anyone can do about it.
