10Trax: Everything you should listen to that isn’t Drake’s new album

Drake's fine but there's been so much other new music this week that you could listen to instead.

Let’s be honest, twenty-five tracks is way too long for any album, let alone a Drake album. My main complaint about Views was that it was too long and making Scorpion even longer isn’t doing Drizzy any favours in my book. Drake is at his best when he’s working off the cuff, buoyed by the energy of people like Baka, Blocboy JB or Giggs. That’s why More Life was great and why the main takeaway from Scorpion so far has been Jay-Z’s guest verse. In place of those twenty-five Drake tracks then, please allow me to present ten, much better new tracks. Don’t @ me.

Pavan – ‘The Replay’

Pavan are a pair of gardeners that make analogue-led electronic music in their spare time. ‘The Replay’ is the lead single from their new EP and it’s absolutely glorious. This is the kind of track that makes you want to spend your pay cheque on modular synths and spend the weekend in your garden shed.

Barney Artist – ‘Something True’

Barney Artist is the latest musician to break out of the same South London scene that brought us Tom Misch, Loyle Carner and Alfa Mist and that same mix of jazz and hip hop runs through his work as well. Expect to hear a lot more of him this year.

Young Fathers – ‘Holy Ghost’

Young Fathers have never released a bad music video and ‘Holy Ghost’ is no exception. Shot in Infrared it sees the trio disposing of bodies in the mountains while also doing what appears to be a series of pagan rituals? It’s not entirely clear what is going on but it’s excellent nonetheless.

Bondax – ‘Real Thing’

Bondax are reborn. Gone are the Magaluf-friendly club tracks and in their place is polished, poised, party-ready disco anthems. This is indeed the ‘Real Thing’.

Charli XCX – ‘5 In The Morning’

Nothing cans top Charli XCX releasing new music it seems. Not only did she drop the video for ‘5 In The Morning’ this week but she also came through with two new tracks this morning as well. It’s hard to dispute Charli’s claims that she’s ’24/7, 365′.

Lucy Lu – ‘Promise I Broke’

Lucy Lu is friends with the likes of Puma Blue and Nilufer Yanya, who are already firm Notion favourites and judging by ‘Promise I Broke’ he’s about to join their ranks.

syd B – ‘Feel Love’

syd B comes through with a dreamy slice of hip hop tinged bedroom pop. This sound is fast becoming the auditory shorthand for summer 2018.

Let’s Eat Grandma – ‘It’s Not Just Me’

You have to listen to Let’s Eat Grandma’s new album I’m All Ears right now. Every single song is a masterpiece and they work together like every album should. ‘It’s Not Just Me’ is a shimmering slice of pop perfection, it should soundtrack every weekend.

YG – ‘Big Bank ft. 2 Chainz, Big Sean, Nicki Minaj’

YG enlists some big names for his latest single ‘Big Bank’. Despite pulling in features like these, YG is still one of the most underrated MCs on the West Coast, his new album can’t come soon enough.

Migos – ‘Narcos’

This is 100% only in her because they filmed the video at Madonna’s house in Miami.
