10Trax: Justin Timberlake is going country after all?

We really don't know what to make of Justin Timberlake's new music, but luckily there's a lot of other new releases this week too.

It’s a big Friday on the old pop charts. New albums from Rhye and Hookworms as well as new music from Lykke Li, The Streets and Sevdaliza. However, the main story of the day is Justin Timberlake who’s much-speculated-about new album Man Of The Woods is out today. Based on the singles alone it’s a mix of cyberpunk inspired future R&B and old school pop-tinged country which is certainly a bold move for a man on his fifth solo album. Bon Iver it ain’t, but it’s certainly been the subject of a lot of conversation. Anyway, here’s the title track from that and nine other new songs to listen to.

Rhye – ‘Count To Five’

Rhye’s second album BLOOD is out today and it’s another dose of the haunting, intimate funk they blessed us with the first time around. “Count To Five’ is the new single from it but the whole project deserves your attention this weekend.

Lets Eat Grandma – ‘HOT PINK’

Let’s Eat Grandma have been an exciting prospect for a while now but I don’t think anyone was expecting this from their new single. Our current cover star SOPHIE provides the beat on this, a chaotic post-industrial banger that suits the Norwich teens alarmingly well. More of this please.

Girlpool – ‘Picturesong ft Dev Hynes’

A Girlpool and Dev Hynes collab was never going to be anything other than dreamy but I’ll be damned if this isn’t giving Rhye a run for their money on smoothest track of the track.

Sub Blue – ‘Range Rover’

There’s a gothic drama to Sub Blue’s take on R&B that feels very 2018. If you like your Weeknd pre-House of Balloons then this is one for you.

Sevdaliza – ‘Soul Syncable’

Every now and again a song comes along that sounds like it should’ve already existed before this moment. ‘Soul Syncable’ is one of those songs. Sevdaliza rides this beat expertly, it’s a little bit trip-hop, a little bit R&B and wonderfully cinematic. If you’re still sleeping on her it’s really time you wake up.

Lykke Li – ‘Time In A Bottle’

Lykke Li returns with a cover of Jim Croce’s ‘Time In A Bottle’ that was made for Sunday afternoons. Here’s hoping that between this and her appearance at Primavera this summer we’ll get a new album.

Hookworms – ‘Each Time We Pass’

Hookworms’ third album is out today and frankly, it’s great. A perfect mix of frantic energy and more sky-ward looking moments like new single ‘Each Time We Pass’, it’ll make your weekend 100% more effervescent, I guarantee.

Justin Timberlake – ‘Man Of The Woods’

I wasn’t going to include this one but really, what is going with Justin Timberlake? I haven’t listened to Man of The Woods (the album) yet but I can’t possibly imagine how this song and ‘Filthy’ are on the same project. Is JT a genius? Has he lost it completely? Is this post-Post Malone? I think I’m having a Timberlake-induced existential crisis.

The Streets – ‘If You Ever Need to Talk I’m Here’

You know what, I do need to talk Mike Skinner, thanks very much. Want to discuss the new JT album over a few cans?
