Normally, these playlists start off with a glib introduction about the miserable state of the world, but this week Gorillaz released four new tracks and Kendrick Lamar came back with a new song so, try as I might, I can’t be mad. This week also saw the return of Perfume Genius and new cuts from Toddla T and Murkage Dave’s HALFBROTHER, so safe to say 10Trax is jam-packed this week. Let’s get stuck in.
Toddla T – ‘Blackjack21’ ft Andrea Martin
Toddla T gets all Game Of Thrones meets Trainspotting in his new video for the infectious ‘BlackJack21’. This track is a big departure for Toddla and we’re very excited to see where it takes him.
Gorillaz – ‘Saturn Vibez’ ft Popcaan
It’s impossible to pick just one of the new Gorillaz tracks to include in this week’s playlist, so I’m throwing in ‘Saturn Barz’ because it has the best music video. Also, this is the best Popcaan feature since ‘Good Times’.
Run The Jewels – ‘Legend Has It’
The first music video from RTJ3 has been a long time coming, but it’s well worth the wait. El-P and Mike appear in an increasingly psychedelic police line-up, as the cops try and determine who the real jewel runners are, pay attention for the twist.
Migos – ‘What The Price’
If you ever needed visual proof that rappers are the new rock stars, we present the new Migos video for ‘What The Price’. Leather jackets? Check. Keytars? Check. Bar fights? Check. It’s official.
Nite Jewel – ‘2 Good 2 Be True’
If you’re after a more flamboyant Friday night than trappin’ with the Migos may we suggest Nite Jewel’s sparkling, delicate new dance number, ‘2 Good 2 Be True’? If what Romare and co. create is micro-house then this is micro-disco, and it’s really, really good.
HALFBROTHER – ‘Love Letter’
Tonga Balloon Gang main-man Murkage Dave has teamed up with Patrick Scally for a new Alt RnB project by the name of HALFBROTHER. It’s lo-fi, loving and an essential track for the early hours of tomorrow morning.
Drake – ‘No Long Talk’ ft Giggs
Ok so ‘Fake Love’ or ‘Passionfruit’ are the obvious cuts, but neither of them feature Giggs so what are you gonna do? Yes, Drake’s road slang is kind of corny but let’s take a minute to appreciate that a man who was banned from performing in the UK is now featured on an album with Drake. More Life indeed.
Pond – ‘The Weather’
Pond enlisted their old buddy Kevin Parker to produce their new album and judging by ‘The Weather’, the results are bloody lovely. Find a sunny patch of grass and sprawl out to it this weekend.
Perfume Genius – ‘Slip Away’
Perfume Genius’ return has been slightly overshadowed by the huge rollout of Gorillaz’ album announcement and Kendrick Lamar’s surprise return, but that doesn’t make it any less exciting. ‘Slip Away’ is dramatic, stadium sized and somehow still manages to remain nuanced. Mike Hadreas at his finest.
Kendrick Lamar – ‘The Heart Part 4’
Kendrick Lamar remains the greatest rapper alive; this is merely a reminder of his prowess. April 7th can’t come soon enough.
