Well kids there’s going be (another) election and unless your Theresa May you’re probably not feeling too good about it. This week hasn’t been all bad though, yesterday was of course, based stoner holiday 420, tomorrow is Record Store Day and the week has been stacked with new releases. Get up to speed and forget about the coming weeks of coalitions, conservatives and other c words that aren’t fit for publication.

Kendrick Lamar – ‘DNA’

It’s Kung Fu Kenny vs Kung Fu Kenny in the video for DAMN. highlight ‘DNA’. What’s better than Kendrick Lamar going HAM? Don Cheadle going HAM at Kendrick Lamar, spitting his own bars in his face before collapsing into a heap. If Jeremy Corbyn walks about to this at his next rally, he’ll win the election, trust.

Lil Yachty – ‘Peek A Boo’ ft. Migos

If ‘DNA’ wasn’t enough to work out your election-related end of week stress, then Lil Yachty’s new cut with the Migos should do the job. This a new, more conventional style for Lil Boat but basically everything Quavo and co touch is gold, so we’re not mad.

Sarah Close – ‘Caught Up’

Sarah Close is a wholeee different kind of new-gen British singer. Over chiming melodies and bouncing drums Close laments the zombie apocalypse, boring men and meth. Oh, and JME rates her, so I don’t even really need to write anything, do I?

Lana Del Rey – ‘Lust For Life’ ft. The Weeknd

Lana Del Rey has somehow managed to get moodier and even more dramatic with this one but hot damn, this track knows how to grab your attention. Abel and Lana’s voices work extremely well together as always, and those synths positively thunder underneath. One for your brooding weekend introspection.

Rex Orange County – ‘Untitled’

Our boy Rex makes it three for three with his new single ‘Untitled’. A more sombre affair than ‘Best Friend’ or ‘UNO’, ‘Untitled’ deals with heartbreak and it does it so well it might just break your heart.

S4U – ‘Isle of Dogs’

S4U are at their best when they’re reworking 90s RnB into Gothic love songs. Luckily their new single is exactly that, a dark, jealous number bristling with hostility and lust equal measure. Sunday morning 5 am vibes.

Dua Lipa – ‘Lost In Your Light’ ft. Miguel

Dua Lipa enlists king of this shit Miguel for her sparkling new single ‘Lost In Your Light’. Dua and Miguel go verse for verse, longingly crooning at one another until a pop hit is born. The sound of this weeks pre-drinks for sure.

Paramore – ‘Hard Times’

Paramore are back in their latest incarnation. They might be down to just three members, but that hasn’t stopped them jumping on the nu-Talking Heads vibe with their colourful new single ‘Hard Times.’ Proof that even if the 70s are the current vogue, the ghost of the 80s is never far away.

Nicki Minaj – ‘No Frauds’ ft Lil Wayne & Drake

Queen Minaj comes to London for the video for ‘No Frauds’ and she brought both Weezy and Drizzy with her. Remy Ma might have sent first but Nicki’s throne isn’t under threat.

Bace – ’50 T.A.P’

Much has been made of ‘afrobeats influence’, but we haven’t heard much actual afrobeats. Afro B’s new compilation of British afrobeats is an essential guide to the current scene. If you haven’t heard it yet start with this new one from Bace and get your weekend right.
