It’s December 15th folks, aka the biggest day for new releases this side of spring. The last week before the Christmas charts it’s always big but fuck me, 2017 has really gone for it. Today we’ve been blessed by new albums from N.E.R.D, Charli XCX and Brockhampton as well as new music from Billie Eilish, Ebenezer and a new video from Stormzy. There’s the new Eminem album as well, though let’s be honest the less said about that the better. Anyway for the last time this year, get up to speed on the best tracks of the week below.
BROCKHAMPTON – ‘Rental’
BROCKHAMPTON have had one hell of a year. Having started 2017 in relative obscurity they’re now one of the most hyped acts in hip hop and have successfully redefined the boy band on the way. Saturation III is every part as wild and off the wall as I & II, ‘Rental’ is the single they dropped today but honestly every track bangs.
Stormzy – ‘Blinded by Your Grace Pt. 2 ft MNEK’
Stormzy is just a bonafide national treasure now isn’t he? ‘Blinded By Your Grace Pt.2’ was always one of the highlights of GSAP and now Big Mike has come through with a suitable heart-string tugging video to match. This will make your mum cry but, in like, a nice way?
Charli XCX – ‘Backseat ft. Carly Rae Jepsen’
Pop’s reigning innovators team up for a futuristic, unashamedly synthetic hyperballad. This one was made for the critics, the only things missing is a surprise guest verse for Lorde.
Fredo X Not3s – ‘YRF’
You know when the music video opens with a ‘everything in this video is a work of fiction…’ disclaimer some greasy shit is about to go down. Fredo and Not3s get seriously cold on this one with some Nate Dogg and Warren G vibes throughout.
Oh Sees – ‘Drowned Beast’
Switching gear dramatically, Oh Sees have come through with a psyched out, brain-melting new single ‘Drowned Beast.’ Come for the intergalactic animated music video, stay for the oozing, sludgy guitars.
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard – ‘Beginners Luck’
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard head to the casino on their wonderfully 60s new single. Hints of the Kinks, Hendrix and the freaky jazz they dabbled in on their third album of this year melt together on ‘Beginner’s Luck.’ They said they were going to release five albums this year and it looks like they’re about to make it.
Eliza – ‘Wasn’t Looking’
The artist formerly known as Eliza Doolittle is back. Now going by just ‘Eliza’ she’s swapped the twee Thames-beat folk for this seductive funk-infused thing and honestly, it works. Color us intrigued (sorry).
N.E.R.D – ‘Don’t Don’t Do It!’
It’s No_One Ever Really Dies day, and you should go an listen to the whole album right now. If you need convincing here’s Kendrick doing what he does best over the kind of hyperactive beat that made N.E.R.D so great to begin with.
Khalid – ‘Saved’
Khalid continues his hot streak with ‘Saved’ another one of the millennial-era love songs that he does so well.
Zaytoven – ‘Five Guys ft.Migos & Young Thug’
Is there anything better than reading the words Zaytoven featuring Migos and Young Thug? Well, yes, several things but none of them will inspire you to turn up as much. Merry Migos Christmas.
