The BBC has unveiled the longlist for its annual Sound Of… poll for 2018. Celebrating its 16th anniversary this year, the selected panel includes representatives from international festivals like Primavera, previous Sound Of artists such as Loyle Carner and BBC XTRA’s Charlie Sloth among the judges. Chosen by over 170 influential people in music, experts include former nominee Stormzy and last year’s winner Ray BLK.
This year is the youngest longlist in the poll’s history thanks to 15-year-old American singer-songwriter and N0tion 77 star, Billie Eilish and features the likes of IAMDDB, Khalid, ALMA and more. Meanwhile repping for Manchester are urban jazz singer IAMDDB, indie pop band Pale Waves and singer-songwriter Tom Walker. Brooklyn-based house producer Yaeji and Norweigan singer Sigrid have also picked up nominations as have London-based collective Superorganism. Not only has every artist been supported in some way by BBC Music outlets like Radio 1 and 1Xtra, at Notion we’ve met with newcomers like Rex Orange County and caught up with Finland’s brightest star ALMA.
A daily countdown of the Top 5 begins on BBC Radio 1 on January 8th 2018, the winner will be announced live on air by Annie Mac at 10 AM on the 12th January.
