Having just released their second album Peel, Coves are gearing up for a big Summer. Not only are they supporting the Pixies at their London date in July, but they’re also one of a host of acts taking to Victoria Park in June for this year’s Field Day. Playing on Saturday 11th the Warwickshire duo will share the stage with the likes of James Blake, Mabel and Skepta as they bring their shoegaze talents to Hackney. In their mood board, singer Beck Wood shares the inspirations behind the new album and let us into the band’s frankly brilliant-looking world.
Beck: I get inspired by my imagination, and the imagination of others that are around me. Being free with your thoughts to me is a happy sign, and gives you the freedom to do what ever it is in life you want to do. Your imagination is the gateway to anything you dream of. I have been lost many times in my head and sometimes you cant find the way out, when this happens I tend to sit down with a notebook and pen and that’s when I get my best ideas down.
This is a life statement for me. ‘Life is ether a daring adventure or nothing.’ This speaks for itself, why not live like this? Adventures are your inspirations that help your soul and mind come up with the most amazing plans you need in your life. I have adventures everyday, we all do, big ones or small ones; we all have them. Open your eyes and you will see. A happy soul is a happy you, and a happy you means you can do anything you want/wish to do.
The big outdoors. Fresh air, nature, the sun, the moon, the rain, the wind. Nature gives us life and what more do we need in life? You can do anything you want in nature and nature in return gives up everything. The freedom you have in the middle of the night looking up at the stars that shine so bright above you, you can dream and let your imagination go wild or when the sun beats down on you, giving you nothing but a big bright smile on your face. Nature makes me so happy and so content.
Laughter and having people around me is a key thing for me. The love of my friends and my family around me is massive and the most important thing in my life. On your own you’re only one, but with someone else you are twice that and stronger. I can laugh on my own but laughing with someone else gives you the best feeling in the world and it makes me feel like I can do anything with my life.
I get inspired by colour. Colour can change people’s moods and feelings. Colour for me is like taking a deep breath and blowing it out. My favourite colour is teal, this colour soothes me when I’m down and makes me feel good inside and out. Colour is all around us and, without you knowing, it influences each of us in our life decisions. I chose to do our album Peel all black and white so none of our colour choices influenced people in the listening. I want people to add their own colour to it. I want to see the colours they see when hearing the album.
