LUCIANBLOMKAMP is hard to nail down to one sound. The Australian producer, singer and multi-instrumentalist is known for tying strings between far-flung scenes, revealing new nebulas of connections and conjuring foreign, and at times unsettling sounds. He’s worked with everyone from American R&B upstart 6LACK to ex-Roll Deep member Trim on tracks that incorporate Burial-esque dance music, gothic R&B and everything in between. If there’s one thing that unites LUCIANBLOMKAMP’s broad church, it’s a penchant for dark, low-end heavy production. The lighter melodies and grooves BLOMKAMP uses to balance his sound are often buried in layers of distortion and oppressive bass, forced to claw their way out the murk as the tracks develop.
Earlier this year LUCIANBLOMKAMP released the second part of his ongoing album trilogy Sick Of What I Don’t Understand. The release leans heavier on BLOMKAMP’s R&B influence, delivering a series of caliginous tracks that play with darker elements of the genre while also incorporating wonky-legged jazz, drum and bass and samples of what sounds like broken children’s toys. Given the vast array of influences on display, we thought LUCIANBLOMKAMP would be the perfect fit for our latest Groundwork mix. Needless to say, he didn’t disappoint, placing the likes Oneohtrix Point Never, XXYYXX and Carl Craig alongside each other in a mix that showcases his love of both brooding electronics and the euphoric potential of dance music.
Take us through your mix – who have you included in it and why? <
This mix is basically just a summary of the music that has shaped the way I produce. I definitely listen to other genres and styles outside of these, but I feel as far as the LUCIANBLOMKAMP project goes this is a pretty good representation.
When did you first start listening to this kind of music?
Well, I guess it’s a real mixed bag as far as styles so I would’ve started listening to them at different times. I would’ve been listening to more hip-hop orientated stuff similar to 6lack and TAPZ from around 2010ish although it’s all kind of just a blur though, to be honest. I don’t think my taste has developed in particular stages from one period to another, rather just very very slowly evolved from when I started producing.
When did you start making music?
I started playing violin when I was six so music has basically always been around me in some shape or another. I only really started producing my own music during the middle of high school though, then started releasing it as LUCIANBLOMKAMP from 2013.
Who’s your favourite artist in this mix? Why?
Probably Oneohtrix Point Never. While I wouldn’t say he’s necessarily my favourite artist in general, he’s been such a huge influence on me for so many years that it’d be wrong to really name anyone else. His work in so many different styles has been incredibly inspiring, especially his score for ‘Good Time’.
Which is your favourite track? Why?
Super tough call but it might actually be ‘Guided By Flux’ by Planete. While it’s probably stylistically one of the more distant tracks from what I do personally, this track’s been out for over a year and I still have it on at least a weekly rotation. Timeless boogie if there ever was one.
