It’s been a fantastic year for singer Jorja Smith; shes blessed us with her feathery vocals on her independent EP Project 11, worked with Drake on his More Life playlist and showcased her impeccable writing skills on summer anthem ‘On My Mind’. Now, ending the year on cloud nine, today (December 4th), the BRIT awards have announced Smith as the winner of the 2018 Critics’ Choice Award.

The Critics’ Choice Awards has a strong record of identifying successful British recording artists, with past winners including  Jessie J, Emeli Sande and Rag’N’Bone Man. All told, the past winners of the award have collectively sold over 70 million albums.

In a statement, Smith showed her gratitude to fellow nominees and Notion cover-stars, Mabel and Stefflon Don: “to be a part of an all-female shortlist alongside Mabel and Stefflon Don, who’ve both had incredible 2017s, makes it better.” Smith went on to say, “I cannot believe it, it’s been an unforgettable 2017 during which I’ve fulfilled so many of my dreams and this is such a special way to end the year.”

Marking ten years since its launch, Smith will be the first to receive a 2018 BRIT Award designed by Sir Anish Kapoor. With lots more to come from Jorja Smith in 2018, starting the year on a high she’ll be performing at the award ceremony on February 21st at The 02 Arena, London.
