After months of speculation it looked like the inevitable had happened at the Oscars last night when Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway (aka Bonnie and Clyde) handed the Oscar for ‘Best Picture’ to the cast and crew of La La Land. Only a few minutes and several acceptance speeches later was the pair’s mistake realised when one of La La Land‘s producers was handed the card with the awards real winner Moonlight named on it.
The response from the audience and award winners alike was as confused as you’d expect but after a minute of onstage chaos, the Oscars had been swapped and Moonlight had made history, in more ways than one. As well as being the second lowest-budget film to ever win ‘Best Picture’ after Rocky, the film’s Mahershala Ali became the first muslim actor in history to win an Oscar, picking up ‘Best Supporting Actor’ for his role as Juan.

While it missed out on the biggest award of the night, La La Land did pick up six other trophies including for ‘Best Original Score’ and ‘Best Original Song’, with Emma Stone also winning ‘Best Actress’ for her part as Mia. Elsewhere Casey Affleck won ‘Best Actor’ for Manchester by the Sea and Viola Davis picked up the Oscar for ‘Best Supporting Actress’ while Zootopia won ‘Best Animated Picture’.
