This weekend the American national treasure Lana Del Rey attended the iconic Coachella Music Festival. While the ‘Video Games’ singer was not performing this year, she was however seen in viral videos groovin’ out to Kendrick and Gaga’s sets, and hanging out with fellow singer Katy Perry. While it seemed like Lana was having a good time, on the other side of the world international conflict was on the brink. The singer evidently could not get this off of her mind, taking to Instagram shortly after the festival, writing “I had complex feelings about spending the weekend dancing whilst watching tensions with North Korea mount” as caption for her post. The post was a self-taken video of Lana, edited in her familiarly grainy and retro style. In this, the doe-eyed beauty previews roughly one minute of a brand new track, written in response of the American / North Korean conflict over the weekend.
I’m not gonna lie- I had complex feelings about spending the weekend dancing whilst watching tensions w North Korea mount. I find It’s a tightrope between being vigilantly observant of everything going on in the world and also having enough space and time to appreciate God’s good earth the way it was intended to be appreciated. On my way home I found myself compelled to visit an old favorite place of mine at the rim of the world highway where I took a moment to sit down by the sequoia grove and write a little song. I just wanted to share this in hopes that one individual’s hope and prayer for peace might contribute to the possibility of it in the long run. Hope everyone has a nice day, with love from California
Performed solely acapella in the middle of a nature reserve, the singer’s chilling vocals poignantly sting, reminding us of the current state of the world. However, it wasn’t Lana’s intention to evoke sadness, but instead peace and solidarity, writing “I just wanted to share this in hopes that one individual’s hope and prayer for peace might contribute to the possibility of it in the long run”.
Amongst high-profile names such as Father John Misty, Kaytranada, and Mac DeMarco were performers such as Lorde, Lady Gaga, and Kendrick Lamar, who all premiered new tracks over the weekend, too. Set to make a huge comeback this year with forthcoming album Melodrama, Kiwi singer Lorde smashed her set at Coachella. She debuted two brand new tracks from Melodrama including the previously unheard ‘Homemade Dynamite’, and the two-day-old ‘Sober’. Melodrama is due to come out on 16 June.
Lady Gaga joined the new music train this weekend as well. With fifth album Joanne being released not long ago, Lady Gaga has already got back to writing and performing new music. Titled ‘The Cure’ her new track is a pure pop classic, and it’d be no surprise to see it topping the charts this summer. Kendrick also performed eight of the fourteen tracks from his latest album DAMN., being the first time any of the tracks were performed live. Check out Lust For Life‘s lead single ‘Love’ below.
