RnB has been getting very space-age of late. From The Weeknd’s Starboy to the genre’s embrace of the purple sound, there’s a whole generation of space-inspired RnB artists out there at the moment. Peculiarly, many of the scene’s brightest stars at the moment hail from outside of the genre’s American homeland, cutting their teeth in London, Toronto and Europe’s capital cities. Case and point is Amsterdam’s Mar, of Dutch, Indonesian and Carribean descent, the singer has a worldly take on RnB’s history, taking his biggest queues from Bjork and Prince.
His latest single, ‘Spaceship’, premiering today on Notion, is a haunting example of his fusion of styles. Starting sparse and gently building up to a seductive late-night anthem, delicate guitar work ala the Purple One contrasts with programmed drums and Mar’s smooth falsetto. The track twists itself into new rhythms and melodies, breaking down midway into a Caribou/ Four Tet-esque refrain of tropical drums. The track is the latest single from Mar’s upcoming EP Things Will Be which is due for release on November 23rd. Listen to ‘Spaceship’ below.
