Mark E. Smith, founder and frontman of Manchester post-punk band The Fall died last night at his home a statement from the band’s manager has confirmed. He was aged 60. Smith had been suffering from health problems throughout 2017 and was forced to cancel a run of live dates due to respiratory problems. The cause of his death has not yet been revealed.
Mark E. Smith founded The Fall in 1976 and was the only constant member of the band throughout its forty-plus years. Known for his acerbic sense of humour, uncompromising musical style and distinctive sing-speak vocals, Smith released more than thirty studio albums with The Fall. The band are credited with influencing the likes of Sonic Youth, LCD Soundsystem, the Arctic Monkeys and Fat White Family. The group’s last release was 2017’s New Facts Emerge.
