From Innervisions to inside the Neptunes' sessions with Justin Timberlake, SG Lewis gets into his deepest obsessions for his exclusive mood board

If you’re gonna make it in the music industry today, you’ve got to be able to do it all. Luckily that’s never been a problem for PMR’s latest star SG Lewis. Having started off making beats in his University of Liverpool halls of residence, Lewis is now 2016’s answer to the one man band. With a little help from label-mates Disclosure and a certain Scottish superstar DJ by the name of Calvin Harris, Lewis has turned his hand to songwriting, producing and singing, all with SoundCloud-smashing results. His latest single ‘Meant To Be’ was produced by none other than the Neptunes’ Chad Hugo, not bad for a kid still on his debut EP. Ahead of his sold-out show at KOKO tomorrow night, we get to know what makes him tick.

Attack On Titan

“A friend recently put me on to this Anime series, which I ended watching entirely in about 6 days – some of the visuals are so dramatic and epic in the series, and really stunning. I try to imagine my own musical accompaniment to some of the scenes, and try to capture the epic nature of the show instrumentally.”

D’Angelo – Voodoo

“I have a theory about why D’Angelo is so good. Some people are sad, some people are happy, some people are in love, some people are lonely. But EVERYBODY wants to get down, and in that case, everybody can connect with D’Angelo’s music. Tell me I’m wrong! Making music that evokes that feeling is one of my favourite things to attempt in the studio.”

Summer Festivals & Playing Live

“Developing the live show has been one of the biggest challenges I have faced so far as an artist, and with the help of some amazing people (Ollie, Grant, Max & Nick) we started to build the beginnings of my vision of what the live show should be last year. I think playing the music live to fans and new listeners really holds a mirror up to what you’re creating, and reminds you of the reason you’re creating the kind of music you are – this in itself feeds back into the studio. There is such a long way to go until the live show is everything I want it to be, but it’s building all the time.”

Innervisions, Afterlife and other Record Labels

“I love pop music and am obsessed with late 90s R&B (Neptunes and Timbaland productions), and I think this influence is pretty apparent in my music – however, a further removed influence would come from different genres of club music. I spent time as a resident DJ in Liverpool for Chibuku, an amazing club night with a lot of history. I gained exposure to so much amazing club music and different genres, and still love buying records from my favourite house, disco, and techno labels. I love the progressive nature of DJ sets from artists like Tale Of Us, Mind Against, and Joris Voorn, and try to emulate some of the sounds in their production in a different context musically.”

The making of Justified

“There are hours of unedited handy-cam footage from inside the studio when The Neptunes were working on Justin Timberlake’s debut album, Justified. The Neptunes are some of my all-time production heroes, and their ability to craft pop music with soul and integrity is something really unique. It’s amazing to watch them at work with a young JT.”

Bon Iver at AIR Studios

“Probably my favourite recorded live session in existence. Whenever I have creative block, I always watch this video.”
