Ravyn Lenae has released the first single from her Steve Lacy produced debut album, ‘Sticky’. Opening with dramatic organ chords, the track soon morphs into a funk-infused jam, Lenae’s vocals swirling as Lacy’s signature laid-back guitar and lolloping bass mingle underneath.
At just 19-years-old, Steve Lacy has been fortunate enough to work with the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Tyler, the Creator and more – but it was Ravyn Lenae’s ‘can’t be defined’ approach on her March EP Midnight Moonlight that attracted him to the Chicago native. In an interview with Beats 1 Lacy said: “It was dope because she’s not locked into a certain style or vocal range so anything I’d give her she’s like ‘I got you.’” Continuing, he comments on his approach to the opportunity, “It’s entirely produced by me, the first thing that I’m entirely producing. When I got the opportunity I looked at it as like – yes, this is my Pharell/Kelis, my Timberland/Aaliyah, my J*Davey moment. I had to take it.”
At present, Lenae is opening SZA’s Ctrl Tour with Smino. Listen to ‘Sticky’ below.
