Skepta claims he turned down an MBE on surprise new track Hypocrisy

Skepta returns with a new track ahead of his headline slot at Wireless this weekend.

Skepta has been off the grid for a minute. After a mammoth 2016, this year has been fairly quiet for the Tottenham MC, but it looks like he’s back. Ahead of his headline performance at Wireless Festival, this Saturday Skepta has dropped a new track ‘Hypocrisy.’ The track was produced by the MC himself and sees Skepta make a number of outlandish claims including that he has 15 iPhones and turned down an MBE.

The track also sees Skepta shout out Wretch 32 and Kendrick Lamar placing both of them in his Top 5, alongside himself of course. ‘Hypocrisy’ also references his recent Ivor Novello wins, where he won Songwriter of the Year and Best Contemporary Song.

While this is the first anyone has heard of Skepta’s supposed MBE nomination it wouldn’t be the first time a prominent underground musician has been offered an honour and rejected it. David Bowie famously turned down both a CBE and a Knighthood, Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols turned down an MBE, and John Lennon returned his MBE in 1969 in protest at Britain’s involvement in the Nigerian Civil War.
