South London’s Phobophobes get their freak on in the gently horrifying video for ‘The Never Never’

Much has been made of South London’s dominance of the UK rap, grime and RnB worlds of late. However, dig a little deeper and you’ll find that some of the best bands around right now are also emerging from south of the river. Most obvious of these are the Fat White Family, the creepy, politically-charged rockers who crawled out of the Queens Head pub to flip British rock on it’s head. Equally excellent though less known are Phobophobes, who count the Fat White’s former drummer Dan Lyons among their ranks.

The group’s latest single is ‘The Never Never’ a chaotic, sinister slice of alternative rock that screams with electric organs and distorted guitars. Not one’s to do things by halves, the accompanying video, premiering today on Notion, is equally mad, featuring some really quite threatening interpretive dance, petrifying purple smoke and a solid dose of primordial goo. Speaking about ‘The Never Never’ the video’s director Tuixén Benet said: “Jamie [Taylor, guitar/vocals] asked me to do a video for ‘The Never Never’. He said he imagined choreography in it, even though no-one else did, and I guess that’s why he chose me. I agreed with him instantly, it’s the kind of beat I like to dance to, not too fast, not too slow, and it allows the kind of weird, punky moves I love. We shot everything in a day and a half in Imagina-Mediapro studios in Barcelona with a wonderful team that did a great job.”
